Is Zscaler a ZTNA?

Table of Contents

Yes. Zscaler offers Zero Trust Network Access through Zscaler Private Access (ZPA). ZPA is one part of the wider Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange platform, alongside Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) for web and SaaS security and Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX) for monitoring.

How Zscaler Private Access works

ZPA connects users to specific private applications rather than to the corporate network. In a typical deployment:

  • A client on the user’s device sends access requests to Zscaler’s cloud.
  • Lightweight App Connectors in the data center or cloud make outbound connections to Zscaler, so applications are not exposed to the internet.
  • Zscaler’s cloud checks identity and policy, then stitches the user and application connections together.

This removes the need for inbound VPN concentrators and limits each user to the applications they are allowed to use, which reduces the risk of lateral movement.

What to evaluate when comparing ZTNA options

Most ZTNA products, including ZPA, meet the core zero trust requirements. The differences show up in operation:

  • Performance. All traffic passes through the vendor’s cloud. How close the nearest point of presence is, and how the service handles packet loss and latency on home and mobile networks, directly affects user experience for video, file transfers and real-time apps.
  • Licensing. ZTNA, internet security and digital experience monitoring are separate Zscaler products. Check which capabilities you actually need and how they are packaged.
  • Deployment effort. Consider how long it takes to roll out connectors, clients and policies for your number of users and applications.

How Cloudbrink compares

Cloudbrink provides High-Performance ZTNA as part of its Personal SASE service, under one license. Connections are protected with mTLS 1.3, with certificates rotated every eight hours, and access is enforced by identity, device posture and location. Integrations with Microsoft Entra and CrowdStrike are built in.

The main difference is performance. Cloudbrink’s FAST Edges are never more than 20ms from users, with a median under 5.2ms, and the Brink Protocol adapts in real time to keep connections stable even at 20% packet loss. One Fortune 100 developer group saw file transfers up to 30x faster. For a side-by-side view, see our Cloudbrink and Zscaler comparison.
