Cisco Umbrella is becoming Cisco Secure Access. In its end-of-life announcement on 1 September 2026, Cisco said Umbrella SIG and DNS are evolving into Secure Access, with end of sale on 31 January 2027.
The products map across roughly as follows:
- Umbrella DNS Essentials and Advantage become Cisco Secure Access DNS Defense, in Essentials and Advantage tiers.
- Umbrella SIG Essentials and Advantage become Secure Access Secure Internet Access (SIA).
- Umbrella Investigate becomes Secure Access Investigate.
- Umbrella data loss prevention becomes Secure Access DLP.
Secure Access also includes Secure Private Access, which provides zero trust network access and VPN as a service, something the Umbrella packages never offered.
The name has changed several times. The service started as OpenDNS, was marketed as OpenDNS Umbrella, and became Cisco Umbrella after Cisco acquired OpenDNS in 2015. Cisco Secure Access became generally available in September 2023, and Cisco described it as an evolution of Umbrella SIG. The endpoint software changed too, with the Umbrella roaming client replaced by the Umbrella module in Cisco Secure Client.
You will still see the Umbrella name in dashboards, documentation and contracts for a while, because support for current customers continues until 31 January 2029. If you are renewing, ask your Cisco account team which Secure Access product replaces each Umbrella part number.
