NordLayer and NordVPN are both built by Nord Security, but they are separate products aimed at different users. NordVPN is a consumer privacy service. NordLayer is a business network security platform designed to be managed centrally by an IT team.
How NordLayer differs from NordVPN
NordVPN gives individuals encrypted connections to a large shared server network, mainly for privacy, streaming and public Wi-Fi protection. Each subscription belongs to one person and there is no admin console.
NordLayer adds the controls an organization needs. Admins manage users from a control panel, connect identity providers such as Entra ID, Okta and Google Workspace through SSO, and create Virtual Private Gateways with dedicated IP addresses. Those dedicated IPs can be allowlisted on SaaS apps and cloud resources so only company users get in. Higher tiers add a cloud firewall for network segmentation, device posture checks, site-to-site connectors and DNS filtering.
What the two products share
Under the hood, the products share technology. Both use NordLynx, Nord’s WireGuard-based protocol, alongside OpenVPN, and both rely on AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption. The real difference is in management, access policy and pricing, which in NordLayer is per user with a five-seat minimum.
For businesses, it is worth remembering that NordLayer is still a tunnel-based VPN at its core. Teams running latency-sensitive workloads such as VDI and video calls often compare it with high-performance ZTNA platforms like Cloudbrink, which optimize the network path itself rather than just encrypting it.
